After surviving the Old Spirit attack that destroyed Adam's city, James, Quinn, Alice, and Violet travel to their newest refuge, a massive village buried deep within Shadow Forest. In her new job as Don's second-in-command, Brynna works in Town Hall, which puts her in daily contact with Adam much to James's dismay. Quinn and Alice are appointed to the new Armed Forces division of Security, and together, they train for Active Duty, and Violet excels in her studies under the head Medice of Pangaea and is happily in love with Nick until she meets a dangerous boy named Caspar. While facing tension within and threats from without, Brynna and her new family count down the days until they strike the Old Spirits, or the Old Spirits strike them.
