South Africa, 1899... I'm in trouble - I am concussed, wounded, and have a large bandage around my head. I am surrounded by scruffy, scowling, heavily armed men, and I am a prisoner. I have felt low before but never as bad as I feel now; thank God Rachel can't see me. She's on the other side of the world and it feels as though I will never be able to find my way back to her.
Meanwhile, Rachel is intelligent, cultured and charming, but things are not what they seem. The victim of rumour and innuendo she reaches a new low in her life, but with Richards help things soon improve until in a desperate attempt to circumvent her father, he volunteers to fight in South Africa and leaves her under a cloud. Then, she has a frightening experience of her own...
When Lawson does deep and meaningful, you do understand! Jean Hendy-Harris (author)
A story so good I didn't want it to end, so I read it twice. Diana Devine
This could be one of the best books I've ever read; don't change a thing. George Flutey

Review:
It's nice to read works that embrace our own country. Forgiven also gives an interesting insight  into the Boer War and is an intrical part of a fascinating love story. It is an easy and very enjoyable read. I read it over a weekend and enjoyed it immensly. Warrick
Review:
The grief caused by war is well etched-out in this book. The old woman who had lost her only son made me teary-eyed - yet she could not blame the English for they had lost sons of their own. Anyone who wants to read a serious, thought-provoking novel should offer "Forgiven" a chance...Maria Lion
Review:
Forgiven is a well written and edited story. It is well constructed and interesting; the time frame and location fascinating... Books go Social, Dublin Ireland.
Review:
I've read Forgiven and thoroughly enjoyed the story. It had a bit of everything to appeal to a wide audience... history, romance, local knowledge. Well done Geoff Lawson.
From the Author
Forgiven is a novel that is an outgrowth of a previous work; a history of the Anglo Boer War. As a historian myself, it is my view that no matter what the age a historical novel is set in, it should preserve the historical setting accurately. Our ancestors were not like us because their world view was dependent on the social and political forces of their time, which was very different to that of today. Therefore, I feel that the accurate portrayal of their attitudes and sensibilities is essential when writing modern, historical fiction.
