When war erupts, Joe, like most Colonists, has mixed feelings. "Am I British Or Am I An American", he kept repeating to himself. Deciding he wants to help his new country Joe attempts to join Washington's Army. Because of his age all he can be is an orderly or a drummer. Not wanting to shine shoes or beat a drum, Joe enlists in the newly formed Continental Navy. At first Joe has trouble accepting the strictness of military life. Slowly Joe transforms, from a simple farm-boy to a player in the American Revolution.
