“You can’t even see it from down there.” Jared turned back around to face Killian.

Killian took a step closer to look down at the worktables on the ground level and shrugged. “I think that it’s here for this.” He was standing a lot closer than he had been.

He could feel the heat radiating off of Jared’s body. His breath caught and he found himself gazing into Jared’s eyes.

Jared was staring right back at him.

They were both locked in each other’s eyes. And the world stopped, everything else just ceased to exist. It was just the two of them, stuck at that moment. He couldn’t have said if it was an eternity or a second, and it didn’t matter what it was. Killian was caught in the annals of lust and desire. He wanted the man. He wanted Jared. And that want caught him in his tracks. He couldn’t move.

  Jared took a step closer.

That was the moment that their lips met. The kiss was hot and passionate, filled with power and need to be together. They wanted to touch. Hands roamed over bodies, touching, feeling, needing each other.

It was uncontrollable, and Killian was just fine with that. His hands slipped under Jared’s shirt, feeling the heat off of the man’s skin. Jared seemed to be just as needy as he was. He could feel Jared’s tongue dancing in his mouth. They wanted each other. Needed the touch.

Killian’s lips trailed down to Jared’s neck and shoulder, pushing the man’s t-shirt to the side. It moved easily, letting the man trace his employee’s collarbone about halfway down.

Jared grunted in frustration and stepped back only long enough to pull the garment up over his head and toss it to the side. He was done with that particular piece of cloth.

Killian stepped forward again, claiming the man’s lips as they rubbed their bodies together. There was so much more that could be touching and it took everything in Killian’s power not to push it further than it had already gone. It wasn’t right to just sleep with an employee and then have to deal with the consequences.

He could barely keep his breath as he pulled away from Jared. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be.” Jared shook his head.

  “We shouldn’t be doing this.”

Jared looked at him carefully, like he was judging what he was going to say next. Finally, he just nodded in agreement. “Sleeping with the boss is always a bad idea.”

“I didn’t just hire you for this.” Killian shook his head.

  “I know.”

Killian bit his lip. He knew that he had just lied to the man that he found so painfully attractive.

The motion seemed to elicit a moan from the carpenter and the man stepped forward again.

The retired actor couldn’t have told you how it happened, but soon they were kissing again. Jared softly bit on Killian’s lip, pulling it just slightly. All it did was turn on the theatre owner more. Everything about Jared was sexy, from the farmer’s tan he had to the pure muscle in his chest.

He had to touch it. Killian had to feel more of Jared. He had to know more about it. He had to touch more, love him more. He had to see more of him. He wanted so much more than they were doing right there.

The touches were electric and powerful.

But it all ended when they heard the bay doors to the workshop slide open. Someone was coming inside the building.

  “Who’s that?”

  Killian frowned. “I don’t know.”

“Could someone be coming to do some extra work?” Jared pulled out his phone. “There’s no shows tonight. And it’s almost midnight now.”

The actor was a little surprised by how much time they had been making out. It had to have been a lot more time than he had initially thought. He shook his head. There were more important things for him to focus on.

Killian shook his head. “It’s pretty late. I don’t think anyone would show up right now.”

They both turned to look out the window. There was a good view of the shop from there. The place was still dark, the only light being from the streetlights pouring in through the open bay doors. Whoever it was had left that entrance open.

  “Do you have an alarm?”

“I deactivated it when we came inside.” Their voices had softened to whispers. Killian knew that they couldn’t be heard from where they were, but he felt the need to do that. It just felt right to whisper when he was there watching someone break into his theatre for an unknown reason.

Several dark figures stole into the building. They seemed to be looking around the place, but Killian had no idea why they would be there. “We need to go.” Killian pulled out his phone.

Jared nodded, grabbing his shirt and pulling it on over his head. “Front door?”

“Yeah, I’m going to call the cops and we’ll wait for them to come outside.” He led the way. Killian knew the fastest way out of the building from where they were and Jared seemed to trust that he had that knowledge without saying a word.

  Chapter Seven

The foreman gave Jared a pointed look. The man was a lot older than the others in the shop, and he had been working with Killian since the actor had bought this place. His hair was greying at the temples, but it only showed the experience that the man carried. Jared could appreciate the man. He had shown his skill multiple times over the short time that they had worked together. “It’s a good thing that neither of you were hurt.”

“Yeah.” Jared looked down at his feet. He was feeling a little embarrassed over everything that had happened. He hadn’t even had much of a chance to talk to Killian since they had accidentally been there when someone was breaking into the theatre. “They didn’t see us.”

The older man shook his head. It was hard to tell if it was frustration at the situation or at Jared. “Which is probably a good thing. What were you doing there that late at night anyway?”

Jared felt the blood run out of his face. He knew that he couldn’t answer that question honestly. There was no way that Killian could look good if he did. “Uh…” He froze, trying to steal a moment to think.

The foreman frowned heavily; he wasn’t happy about the fact that his stuff was destroyed. Jared wasn’t happy about that either. But the show must go on. That was the old saying. “I hope you weren’t working with those guys.”

Jared shook his head. “No. I wouldn’t do anything like that.”

“I trust that. Anyway. I was told to give you an easy day today because of what happened over the weekend.”

Jared nodded. “I should be able to handle anything you throw at me now. You don’t need to worry about it.”

“The cops are probably going to come by to talk to you anyway.” That frown just deepened. The older gentleman was highly disappointed in Jared, and he felt nothing but embarrassment about that. He hated that he had let so many people down. He hated the fact that he couldn’t talk about his boss picking him up in a bar and the two of them ending up back in the theatre-making out when the robbers had shown up.

He couldn’t talk about it. He was absolutely certain that no one would understand how they had been there together.

And he didn’t know what excuse Killian might have used, or if he had told people the truth. No one had said anything about that to him. “What time are the cops supposed to be here?”

“Who knows. Whenever they happen to show up, I think.” The older man shrugged.

“Has Killian been in yet today?”

“He’s off doing reports. It’s too bad those guys got away before the cops got here.”

“Yeah.” Jared nodded. “I heard they destroyed some stuff.”

“A few set pieces for the next show.” The foreman’s frown grew deeper. Jared didn’t know if it was possible for one person’s face to look much more upset, but somehow the foreman managed to do it. “Like they were sabotaging it.”

  “Why would anyone do that?”

  “Because people are assholes.”

  “Did they steal anything?”

“Nothing valuable in the sense it could be sold for any money. Cus
tom set pieces aren’t really that expensive or valuable unless someone needs that exact piece.” The man walked over and pushed on the construction. It made a dangerous creaking sound. “Unless it’s for a popular play that’s already gone on. Then they can get kind of pricey, but no one is going to need our moving staircase.” He shook his head as he looked over at the wooden staircase that they had spent almost a week building. “This was your piece, wasn’t it?”

Jared nodded. “Yeah, I did the work on it. But it’s ok.”

“How long do you think it’s gonna take you to rebuild it?”

“Uh, I’ve still got the plans and I remember all the little tricks that I had to use to get it built. Probably a couple of days to either fix it or build a new one on the base.”

  “Is the base still sturdy?”

“Seems to be.” The younger carpenter nodded. “They mostly smashed the easy to wreck parts. I may even be able to just replace those parts.”

“Makes sure you double-check for structural damage.”

  “Will do.”

  “Anything else you need?”

“Nothing, really.” Jared shook his head. He wasn’t happy that all of his work had been rendered useless by a few guys who seemed to just want to destroy stuff, but it was the way it was. He was going to have to redo most of it.

“Why don’t you get to work on that, then. We’ve got to get this all done as soon as possible. This play is debuting next weekend, so we’ve got to get all of this stuff done.” The foreman was clearly upset by what had happened. “I know it sucks, but it looks like we’ll all be pulling extra hours this week.”

Jared nodded. “Yeah, I guess they just wanted to hurt someone.”

“That’s what it’s looking like, but we’ve got to do some extra work right now. It looks like it was only this set that was destroyed. I wondered if they were targeting this particular play.”

“I don’t know why anyone would do that?”

“It’s a cut-throat business. I don’t think it’s impossible for someone to not want a play to go off, then decide to do something like that.”

Jared didn’t respond. Those thoughts rumbled around in his head and he was curious about what had happened to make someone so angry they would destroy any chances that a play had of showing.

They only had to stop because the police arrived and the criminals had broken out and run away into the New York night, so they hadn’t been caught. Because of that, the actual motive was difficult to assess, so they had no idea if they would be further targets for attacks.

Jared had an idea about that. He tested the strength of the frame as he started to remove the outside of the creation that he had carefully developed. It was going to take a while to do, but with a few extra hours he was sure that he could get it finished once again and ready for the stage.

Killian was watching him. He could almost feel it happening. He excused himself and headed up above the workshop.

He was right. Killian was there. He walked up behind the man. “How are you feeling?”

“A little violated if I’m honest.” The actor’s shoulders were sagging.

Jared had a sudden urge to give the man a hug, try his best to make him feel a lot better. He gave into it. Walking up behind Killian and wrapping his arms around the man’s waist. “I’m sure it’ll get better soon.”

“They say that it can all be fixed.” The actor sighed. “It’s not so bad.”

“But your mind is telling you that it’s the worst thing ever, isn’t it?” He squeezed the man a little tighter, hoping that it translated into Killian not feeling alone. “That’s what always happens. It’s ok.”

“Do you have a lot of experience with break-ins?”

The carpenter sighed heavily. “My dad’s shop was broken into a lot. It felt so wrong every time like someone walked into your inner sanctum and started moving stuff around.” He explained. “It always feels wrong.”

“I shouldn’t be interrupting your job.” Killian was frowning. There was a lot of that going around these days.”

“It’s fine. I can get that work done later.” Jared explained. “I’ll stay a couple of minutes later and make sure that you’re doing all right.”

“It was kind of a bad weekend.”

  “It was.”

“But we can fix it right?”

  “Yeah.”

  “Are you sure?”

“Yeah, it feels bad now, but it’ll get better,” Jared assured the man. “It does get better. I promise.” The act of holding Killian was comforting, something nice in what felt like a building that was falling apart suddenly. Killian was the strength of this place; he was the power that this place needed. And Jared could recognize that the actor needed to stay strong to keep this place running.

“Bad is a nice way of putting how this feels.” He shook his head. “It’s just so strange like I see everything a little bit differently.”

“I know, that’s kind of a hard thing to do.”

“It’s got to be the shittiest feeling in existence.”

“I’m absolutely sure there are shittier feelings, but no one should even have to feel this bad, ever.” Jared shook his head. He was still wrapped around the man, holding the actor close to him from behind. He tried not to move too much so that his body responded to the closeness, but it was already something that he could feel. “I’ll be here as long as you need me to be here.”

“I shouldn’t keep you from your job.”

“I shouldn’t force you to be alone. I can quit the job if I have to.” Jared couldn’t have said why he made that offer, but he did. He couldn’t help it. Something about Killian was exciting and new. And he wanted to make the man feel better about the break-in. He had this burning desire to be some small comfort to this man that he had nearly been with before they were rudely interrupted. “I don’t care. You feel like shit right now, and I want to help you with that.”

“That’s so kind of you.” Killian actually managed to smile a little bit. “But I promise that I’m fine.”

It was such a strange thing, the way they were touching each other, the comfort and security that they both felt so close together. It didn’t take long for everything to fade away, all the worry and the concern was tossed to the side, letting it simply disappear.

Jared realized that there were feelings there. Killian must have felt the same way. He didn’t want to pull away. He didn’t want to let go of the man. He didn’t want to stop touching him. He didn’t want the feeling of hot skin to go away. But he had to step away. He had to get back to work.

But he had to figure out how to do it.

Killian must have sensed everything that he was feeling because his voice was soft and gentle. “You really should go.”

Jared nodded. “Yeah. Work needs to be done.” He slowly pulled his arms away from Killian. “I hope that I at least got you feeling a little better.”

“You did, thanks.” Killian turned and stepped closer to Jared.

He couldn’t help it. Jared leaned in to plant a soft kiss on Killian’s lips.

And then the world went up in fireworks, exploding around them in wild and uncontrolled passion that they couldn’t help or stop. The kiss was freeing, powerful and strong, impossible to resist or control. They needed each other.

Before he knew it, he was backed up against a wall, his arms around Killian as their tongues danced in each other’s mouths. They had a deep desire to touch and feel, it was like that moment in that spot the night before had never ended.

“I want you.” Killian’s voice was lean and husky.

Jared moaned from the sound of the lust in the actor’s voice. “God above, what I wouldn’t give for that.”

“We shouldn’t be doing this.” But Killian wasn’t stopping, his hands were on Jared’s chest, up under his t-shirt and feeling the muscles on the carpenter.

Jared was pushing Killian’s suit jacket off of the other man’s shoulder. “I know. I’m supposed to be worki
ng.”

  “I am too.”

“Office romances never work.” But it was like their bodies wouldn’t listen to their minds. It took seconds to get them messed up, bodies rubbed together and the heat flushing between them, like it was being transferred and grown as it hopped back and forth.

“I know.” Killian agreed but was continuing on. They couldn’t stop. They needed this. They needed each other. They needed everything.

At least until they could hear someone clearing their voice. “Can I borrow the boss for a second?”

Jared’s head snapped in the direction of the female voice. “Oh, uh… sorry.” He frowned.

His shirt was off at this point, so he snatched it quickly while Killian stepped in front of him. “What do you need?”

“We need to buy some stuff that was destroyed. I need some signatures.”

“I suppose we’ll get reimbursed by the insurance company?”

“Yeah, as soon as the claim goes through.” Erika didn’t say a word about what she had witnessed, but she was staring hard at Jared.

He suddenly felt very small as he slipped out of the room and back down to actually work. The lustful throbbing in his pants had faded away, but there was still an edge of denied release in the back of his mind. He would have to take care of that on his own this time.

  Chapter Eight

She was working in his office when he walked in. She didn’t say a word at first, just getting up to walk to the door. He was grateful that she was leaving. He breathed a sigh of relief, but he found the irony in getting some sort of reprieve because he was too mad to speak to her.

Except she wasn’t leaving. She walked over and closed the door. That was it. He knew that he was in for it.

Killian gulped as she turned to face him. “What?”

She had that look on her face, a dangerous one. “What do you think you’re doing?”

“What do you mean?” Killian threw his hands up in frustration. He knew it was wrong and he didn’t want to talk about it, but it was looking like he wasn’t going to be able to defend himself.

“I saw what you were doing. And during work hours.” It had been a couple of hours. He had been careful not to let her catch him alone, but eventually she did. “You should be ashamed of yourself.”
