“Do I look that bad?” He glanced down at himself. From the state of his hands, he must look worse than he thought that he would.

The soreness was already kicking in. He could feel it, the stress and strain of the moment. He wanted to be closer to Killian though. That’s why he had even dragged himself out of bed.

“I ordered breakfast.” The actor explained. “I didn’t know what you would want, so I just got some breakfast sandwiches from the burger joint.”

“I’m a simple guy, that’ll do just fine.” Jared laughed. “I grew up on fast food, this isn’t that bad.” He was smiling, and it felt good to smile even if there was a certain soreness on his cheeks from the physical confrontation that he had with a gunman the night before.

  “Good.”

“Honestly, breakfast sandwiches are probably one of my favorite foods. Greasy and warm. Just totally comforting.” Jared grinned.

“That’s something that I didn’t know.” Killian raised an eyebrow. “From the look of you, I kind of expected you to be a quinoa and kale guy.”

Jared shook his head. “Nope. I got this way from working hard ten hours a day for years. You can’t sustain that kind of life on quinoa and kale.” He laughed. “Need too many calories.”

“I see. I guess that makes sense. I barely remember working a normal job anymore.”

  “Does that bother you?”

“It makes it hard to connect sometimes.” The actor shrugged, looking a little worried. “How are you feeling?”

Jared shrugged, then he winced. His ribs were sore. He stopped and gingerly touched the bruises on his sides. “I don’t think their broken or anything.” He had noticed that the man was looking at him with concern.

“Do you want to go to the hospital? We have insurance, so you won’t have to worry about paying for it.”

Jared shook his head. “There’s no need. I’m fine. I’ll get an appointment through Worker’s Comp and be just fine.”

  “You sure?”

“Yeah, I’m fine,” Jared assured the man and made himself smile. The truth was he knew that he was going to be sore for quite a while. He was definitely going to feel it for a while. “I promise, I’ll be all right. Just a few bruises. He didn’t hit me that hard, just enough to make me ache a bit.”

“Are you sure? I don’t mind taking you.”

“I’m sure. There’s no need to fuss about me. How are you feeling?” Jared moved to change the subject.

It was easier to just forget about what they were talking about. It was a lot of pain that he would rather have forgotten or not even felt beforehand. Jared knew that it was temporary. The pain would fade, but the revelations that this had brought on were not going to go away any time soon. He tried to find a way to find the words. He wanted to explain to the man who was across the counter. He wanted to say the way that he was feeling. He wanted to tell the man what he had overheard. And that he felt the same way.

But the words didn’t come. It didn’t make sense why he couldn’t find the words. Things had happened that made him acknowledge his feelings, but he couldn’t push past it. He couldn’t make himself speak. Instead, he fell into silence.

Killian poured a cup of coffee and pulled out the cream and sugar. The silence continued while Jared prepared his cup just the way he liked it. A lot of cream and very little sugar. It was the way that he had drunk it since he was a teenager and made his own coffee every single morning.

Then Killian walked away so that he could get the food delivery. It involved him heading down to the desk and leaving Jared alone. That gave him time to think about stuff. But there was just too much to make sense of it all. So much stuff had happened between them.

He took the chance to look around the apartment. It was a nice place, decent size and with some sort of security in the building. But it wasn’t great. It gave him more time for the thoughts to echo through his head; there was a lot going on there.

He sat there and pondered what he was going to say and how he was going to do what he needed to say. The answers didn’t come easily; he was struggling with the answers. But there were no answers. He couldn’t find the words. He had been losing his mind. There was so much to think about. So many things to do. So many things that he could have done. So many things he could have made better.

He sighed and waited for Killian to get back up to the apartment. It didn’t take as long as Jared had been counting on. Killian was back while his mind was still driving him crazy.

“Hey!” Killian held up the bag that he had walked down to the desk to get. “Ready for food?”

“Yeah. Better to take the pills with food.” Jared smiled weakly.

Killian looked worried, but he didn’t ask. Probably because the man already knew what the answer was going to be. And it wasn’t an answer that would get them anywhere. “I’ve got sausage, bacon, ham, and a couple of triple meats.”

“Oh, I’ll take one of the triple meats,” Jared spoke up.

“Should have guessed.” Killian was able to smile finally.

“You absolutely should have.” Jared shrugged with his smile strengthening.

“Yeah, I ordered a lot of extra food because I wasn’t sure what you would eat or if you were picky or anything.”

Jared laughed. Maybe it was because of the way Killian had said that or maybe it was because he was nearly deliriously happy with what was going on. He was there, sitting with Killian and close to him. They were alone as they could be. They had the kind of privacy that they could have spent doing anything in. And they were sharing it doing something so ordinary. Something that so many normal lovers do every single day. And that felt amazing.

  “What’s so funny?”

Jared kept grinning. “We’ve been through so much together and we don’t even know each other’s breakfast order.”

“I think we’ve got time to figure all of that stuff out.” Killian shrugged. “It’s not like anyone is going to break into the place again anytime soon. Especially when it got so serious with the guns. I mean, they can’t honestly believe there isn’t a real risk now.”

He asked a question that was bothering him. He couldn’t help but be worried about Killian’s property. The last thing Jared wanted was more of what had been happening. He didn’t want another break-in at the theatre. “Is security going to get improved?”

“Yeah, I plan on that.” Killian nodded. “I’ve already talked to Erika about getting it all set up.”

“Is that who you were talking to?”

“Yeah.” He nodded. “But it’s not that important. I’m more worried about you. And I still think that you should see a doctor and make sure that nothing serious happened.”

“It’s just some bruises and stuff.” The man shook his head. “I know you’re worried, but I’ll be fine. He couldn’t hit me much after I got a hold of him. Mostly just struggle against me.”

“You should at least take a few days off.”

Jared thought about that for a second. It would be a nice compromise. He nodded. “Sure. I can do that.”

Killian volunteered something important. “You know that you can stay here until you feel better.”

“From the look of your face, you aren’t a lot better off.” Jared felt a shiver go down his spine but had decided not to do anything about it at that moment. There were far too many better ways to breach that part of the conversation.

Killian straightened, but he glanced down and to the left. The man must have been worried about the hit that he had taken, but it clearly wasn’t as much as he was worried about Jared’s state. “What do you mean?”

“You’ve got a nice bruise all over your cheekbone where he hit you.”

“He only hit me once.” Killian shook his head. He changed the subject back around to Jared. “Nothing like what happened to you.”

Jared could only assume that Killian was more worried than he was letting on. One of the things with an actor, it was hard to tell when he was actually acting like
there was less wrong than what was really on his mind. “I promise. I’m alive. And I intend to remain that way. I wanted to talk about something else.” Jared explained with a grin.

  “What about?”

“I kind of heard the last bit of that conversation.” He decided to just go at the crux of the issue. To say what he was going to say. “I didn’t mean to listen in, but I was coming out of the room.” He suddenly got hit by a pang of guilt for listening in to the man’s conversation.

  Killian stood there silently.

Jared felt like he was being studied. “I just wanted to say something.”

“Is there something wrong with it?”

“No. Nothing wrong. Absolutely nothing wrong.” Jared shook his head. “I just wanted to say that I appreciate everything you had to say and that maybe…” He paused.

Killian started to smile slightly. He was getting his hopes up. That was a good thing. The man deserved to get his hopes up.

“Maybe I feel the same way.”

In a flash, Killian was around the counter. They were wrapped up in each other. The kisses were like heat and magic, stretching on for an eternity and a second all at once. “I want you so much right now.” Killian was breathless and hot to the touch.

“I want you too.” Jared groaned through the grimace when Killian touched a bruise. The pain struck him by surprise. It was almost like he had forgotten that he had gotten hurt.

“Are you all right?” Killian immediately pulled away. “I didn’t mean to hurt you. I’m sorry.” He looked a little panicked.

“Don’t be. It’s not your fault.” Jared shook his head. “You didn’t do this to me. I just don’t think I can celebrate these feelings right this moment. I’m feeling kind of bad.”

Killian shook his head; it was a mirror of what Jared had done. Maybe that was the whole thing with the emotional connection that they had been denying all this time. The instant connection that neither of them had been able to admit right away. But that was all changing due to this attack. “It can wait. We’ve got some time.”

“I feel like I’ve gotten myself run over by a car.” Jared tried to stretch his side, but it hurt too badly and he gave up. He was feeling painfully sore. Maybe it was the relaxation of admitting how he felt to the actor that he was standing with at that moment.

“I don’t know if that’s normal or not.” Killian shook his head. “But I still think you should get checked out.”

“If I do, will that make you happy?”

“Absolutely.” Killian got this kind of smug look like he had just won an argument.

“Don’t act so weird about this.”

“I’m not acting weird. You’re the one getting all stubborn and stoic.”

“I’m not stubborn or stoic.” The carpenter shook his head. He was chuckling softly. “Don’t act like I’m the one that’s being all stubborn. You’re the one who wants me to go to the hospital over some bruises.”

“I don’t see why you’re so worried about it. Wait; I see why. You’re not paying for it.”

“But you are.” Jared grinned, trying not to laugh at the man. “Acting all tough because I agreed to let a doctor poke at my bruises.”

“You should probably at least get some x-rays.”

  “Fine. You win.”

“Do you want me to come with you?”

Jared smiled softly. “Sure. You can come with me and worry about me more.”

“And that’s exactly what I intend to do.” Killian was grinning oddly. It took a second for Jared to recognize that look. The man was beaming out of pure joy. That was something that he adored, seeing the man just that happy.

“Because you love me?” Jared tried the question, hoping it would land right.

“Because I love you.” Killian agreed with him. He paused before he had said the words however, like he had been thinking about how he was going to respond without ruining what could possibly happen.

“And I love you too.” Jared smiled. Even with the injury, he had never felt quite so happy in his life. He was far beyond ready to admit it. “Are you ready to go?”

Killian took a moment to recover from the agreement. Then he nodded and smiled at him. “Sure, that sounds great. Let’s get you taken care of, then you can take a nap.”

  Epilogue

Killian glanced around the apartment. This was it. The day that they had been waiting for. Jared was finally moving in.

The man had never left the job at the theatre. After the attack, there was absolutely no point in trying to deny the feelings between them. Still, they had decided to take it a little slow, and try to decide what they were going to do.

He was waiting. It seemed to take forever. Jared was supposed to arrive with most of his belongings within an hour. Part of him wondered why he hadn’t gone straight over to Jared’s place after the theatre office had closed down for the evening. There was a show that night. One that Harry had gotten a part in.

Maybe Jared had stayed around to congratulate his friend. That would make sense, but this was still supposed to be the first night they were officially living together. That was something that they were supposed to schedule.

He was pacing. A bit of amusement struck him. Something about this entire thing amused the heck out of him. He was struggling with his own frustration, almost like how this entire ordeal had started.

Only this time he was feeling better. He was happy and his life was feeling a thousand times better than it had been before Jared had walked into the theatre for the first time.

He didn’t have to wait too long. He heard the scrape of the key in the lock.

That had to be him. That had to be Jared.

He nearly jumped for joy but kept himself together.

  Then Jared was inside.

And Killian stood up a little straighter.

“Honey, I’m home.” Jared had a smile that just wouldn’t quit. It was something that he couldn’t have denied even if he tried.

“You are home.” That was a word that couldn’t have made Killian any happier. It didn’t matter that Jared had been practically living there for months. What mattered is that they were officially sharing a home. His bed was now their bed. And it thrilled him beyond belief.

The official move-in had happened slowly. Jared moving a few more things over at a time, until most of his stuff was there.

And then they had decided to make it official. Harry was finding a lot of good work and he wanted to get himself a better apartment.

Jared had decided not to pursue any acting jobs. He had stayed in the set department of the theatre, just to be near Killian. He didn’t have much love for the spotlight anymore.

“What’s on your mind?” Jared was looking at Killian with a bit of concern.

“Sorry, just thinking about how we all ended up here.”

  “Good thinking or bad thinking?”

Killian grinned. “Only the best thinking.”

  “You sure about that?”

  “Absolutely positive.”

Jared walked across the floor and wrapped his arms around the other man. Then they kissed.

In moments they had found their way to the couch where they made out like teenagers, wild tongues swirling around inside their mouths.

They were in love. The pain of the attack was long in the past and they were just two people in love.

And when they made it to the bed, they were already naked, falling all over each other as they rolled around. Jared put his leg over Killian’s as they landed side by side, facing each other.

More kisses followed them, touching and feeling.

Killian felt the touch at first. Jared was rubbing against him.

It was a hard motion, two grinding bodies getting excited together. It didn’t take them long to be undeniably horny. “God, I want you so bad right now.”

“We were supposed to go to dinner.” Killian groaned in desire and need.

Jared shook his head. “We don’t need to have d
inner. We’ve got each other.”

“Why do you have to say stuff like that?”

He shrugged. “Because it feels right to say that.”

“It feels right whenever you say stuff like that.” Killian grinned as they rolled once again, this time with Killian on top.

Jared reached up to the nightstand and grabbed the bottle of lube. “So glad that’s always in reach.”

“That’s because we can’t keep our hands off each other.” Killian grinned and took the bottle. He poured a few drops over his shaft, before stroking himself lightly. “And I don’t want to ever take my hands off of you.”

“I never want you to take your hands off of me.” Jared groaned happily when he felt the man enter him.

Killian reached down between the other man’s legs and started to stroke Jared’s shaft, hoping to help the man feel as good as Killian was at that moment. That only made Jared a little wilder, bucking against him with each thrust. They needed to touch each other.

The rest of the world faded away.

The only thing that existed was the love that echoed between them like pure raw power. It was something that they couldn’t resist. They needed each other. “Mmph.” Jared groaned loudly.

“I know.” Killian was panting as he thrust into the other man.

“I love you so much.” Jared was starting to tense up. It was very clear that the man was getting close to the edge of release.

Killian knew that he wasn’t far behind his boyfriend. And he knew that this was going to last forever. They were going to live like this. Even months down the line, they still needed to be close to each other.

It wasn’t time to ask yet, but he knew that it was coming soon. “Damn Baby. God, I’m not going to last long with you looking at me like that.”

“You’re looking at me the same way.” Jared bucked his hips up to meet the actor’s thrusts. “And it’s doing the exact same thing to me.”

“Mmph.” Killian felt the rush of release wash over him.

Jared followed him over the edge.

They grunted and groaned and moaned loudly as they closed their eyes and felt the magic wash over them.
