“I think he’s doing as okay with it as a father can. I know he’s grateful she’s not leaving the state and she’ll still be so close. Logan is thrilled he’s not losing his best worker,” Rai said. “Hadley is so good there and she’ll only get better as she goes through all of her training.”

Dre pulled onto the interstate to head toward Remington.

“Dalton and Gabby are going to be there, right?” Spencer asked.

“Yep, the whole crew is coming,” Khi said.

Dalton and Gabby were still very happily married with three children. The oldest was nine—he showed up exactly six months after their wedding—and the youngest had just turned three.

“How’s Bev doing?” Rai asked. “She seems really good when we talk.”

“Well, it took some convincing, but with Logan’s position at the homeless shelter and assisting with identifying victims of trafficking, he’s finally talked Bev into a few things regarding Remington Place,” Dre explained. “He’s going to work with Bev on recruiting boarders and he’s got a registered nurse who is going to live on-site—to be a housemother and help the new boarders, but also to keep an eye on Bev.”

“Kinda surprised Bev is okay with that,” Spencer said.

“She’s not selfish. She knows she can’t do it all. This way, she gets to stay in her home and have a part in what she started. She likes that she’s able to help those in need,” Khi said as the car pulled up at the homeless shelter.

Cruz and Logan came out to meet them, hugs all around.

“Man, it’s good to have you back,” Cruz said. “How was this round of world traveling?”

“Good. Tiring and long, but we got a lot done and helped a lot of people,” Rai said.

“Excellent,” Logan said. “One of these trips, we’re going with you.”

“Ha! As if my bosses would ever let me take three months off,” Cruz joked.

He still worked for Jesse at the shop, but spent most of his time working with Logan at the homeless shelter. They’d done a lot to improve and grow the place since Logan had slowly worked his way up the ranks at the shelter.

Once inside, Hadley turned their way, a huge smile on her face. Breaking away from her group of friends, the dark-haired beauty made her way toward the crew and hugged Spencer and Rai before hugging the rest of the gang.

“I’m so glad you guys made it home in time! A birthday party wouldn’t be the same without everyone here,” Hadley said. “Dads!” she hollered. “We can have cake now!”

Ten minutes later, Cooper, Jesse, and Hadley stood behind a table with a gorgeous birthday cake, homemade by Bev, of course. Bev joined them and spoke up first.

“I’m going to say my bit and sit this old ass down,” she started. “I’ve said this at every one of her birthdays, and I’ll say it for as long as the good Lord allows me to be on this earth. This little girl coming into my life was one of the best things that ever happened to me. All of my boarders become friends and family, but Hadley became so much more. She filled a void in my life. She’s the daughter and granddaughter I never had and I love her to the moon and back. Happy birthday,” Bev said, her words catching as Hadley threw herself into Bev’s arms.

Tears flowed all around the room.

Once Bev had taken a seat, Jesse cleared his throat. “I wasn’t prepared to become a father again eighteen years ago, but life doesn’t always care if you’re prepared. Hadley taught me so much about myself and she and I kinda grew up together in a lot of ways. I’m so proud of the person she’s become and I know she’s going to do amazing things.” Jesse wiped at a tear. “And I’m really fucking glad she’s staying close to home. Happy birthday, Hadley girl.”

Cooper kissed Jesse and sniffed before taking Hadley’s hand. “Back when I was your nanny and then your dad’s boyfriend, I imagined a day when we’d stand together and cry as we watched you drive off to college. It was almost unfathomable back then, but here we are. Thank you for not going too far, I’m not sure I could keep this old man in tissues if you left completely. And thank you for the privilege of being your dad.”

Hadley’s tears streamed as she hugged Cooper and Jesse.

Turning to face her family and friends, Hadley smiled through her tears. “Thank you all for being here and for supporting me my entire life. I lost my mom and grandma, but I gained a family and friends I wouldn’t trade for the world.” She reached for Cooper’s hand. “Way back then, when you and Dad would take me to the fountains and let me toss coins, I used to wish for you to be my dad. I knew you were the perfect person for Dad and me, and I’m so very grateful that wish came true.” She turned and smiled at everyone. “I’m the luckiest girl in the world to have my very own Remington Place crew. We may not all be right there together anymore, but we’re in each other’s hearts and that’s what matters. Thank you for being you, thank you for teaching me about love and acceptance, and thank you for shaping me into the person I am today. I look forward to seeing where our journeys take us over the years. No matter what, we’ll always be coming back home to what’s important and that’s family.”

  About the Author

A.D. Ellis is an Indiana girl, born and raised. She spends much of her time in central Indiana as an instructional coach/teacher in the inner city of Indianapolis, being a mom to two amazing school-aged children, and wondering how she and her husband of almost two decades have managed to not drive each other insane. A lot of her time is also devoted to phone call avoidance and her hatred of cooking.

She loves chocolate, wine, pizza, and naps along with reading and writing romance. These loves don’t leave much time for housework, much to the chagrin of her husband. Who would pick cleaning the house over a nap or a good book? She uses any extra time to increase her fluency in sarcasm.
